"The printed word can be read at a time, place, and privacy of one’s own choosing, unlike fleeting, one-time sermons or radio and television messages. The printed word can be read, reread, studied and meditated upon, just as we do the Scriptures.” ~ Joe R. Barnett, via Furman Kearley, 1987 Harding University Lectures, p. 676
Philosophy and Purpose Statement
In his book, Evangelism in the Early Church, Michael Green identifies four evangelistic methods employed by the early church: public evangelism, household evangelism, personal evangelism, and literary evangelism. He begins his discussion of literary evangelism as follows:
"In addition to speaking to people about Christ, whether in public, in small house groups, or as individuals, one further method was open to early carriers of the gospel. Those with the talent could write. And they did. In fact, they invented an entirely new literary form, the Gospel, to carry their evangelistic message." ~ Michael Green, Evangelism in the Early Church, rev. ed. (Eerdmans), p. 346
Green goes on to note how the written Gospels expanded the reach of the earliest evangelists as they spread and defended the faith. Similarly, the epistles also expanded the apostles’ edification of the believers (cf. Rom 14:19; 15:2; 1 Cor 14:12, 26; Eph 4.12–16), widening the reach of their teaching and nurture. Of course, both the Gospels and the epistles continue to strengthen churches today.
As one who has been blessed with the talent and interest in writing, it has always been an important part of my ministry. At this point in my life, it is the primary focus of my service. My aim is to prepare substantive teaching materials for the church drawn from my study of the biblical text and related topics. I do this in the interest of informing and equipping a wider audience for service.

Progress and Goals
In 2015, I began this website where I maintain and periodically add to an archive of teaching and preaching notes, articles, book reviews, and academic papers from my ministry. Beginning in 2018, I began work on a series of books (listed here) and two teaching newsletters: The Berea Page (2019) and Opening the Scriptures (2023).
As I look forward and continue this ministry, I have established the following goals for 2026–2030:
As I look forward and continue this ministry, I have established the following goals for 2026–2030:
- Three new books on biblical texts and topics that will be more detailed and published as both print and epub volumes.
- Six new books that will be published in epub format only; these will be shorter studies drawn and adapted from my archived preaching and teaching materials (because epubs require less formatting time, I anticipate releasing more of these volumes).
- Continue the teaching newsletters, each of which is published 22 times a year (220 total issues projected by the end of 2030).
Help Sustain This Ministry
As with any ministry of teaching, financial support is needed to sustain the work (cf. Matt 10.10; 1 Cor 9:3–12).
Monthly support is needed to underwrite my basic living expenses (housing and utilities) and provide a cushion for other periodic expenses (e.g., car repairs). A commitment to monthly (or other regularly scheduled times) contributions from multiple donors will allow me to realize this goal. (Occasional donations from newsletter subscribers, website visitors, and others will also help.)
All donors contributing monthly or at other scheduled times will receive quarterly reports, as well as discounted prices on books published through this ministry (the teaching newsletters and website archives will continue to be offered free of charge, though occasional gifts will be appreciated).
