Below are study and teaching notes for sermon and class studies of the biblical text. Most include references to other sources I have used in preparation and/or to additional comments I've included to show why I've reached certain conclusions or to consider ideas that go beyond what I was able to share in the notes or their presentation.

Studies in the PsalmsDesigned to facilitate personal study of the Psalms, this series presents a general introduction and overview of the book; identifies and gives examples of the its major theological themes; and then studies several psalms as examples of the different psalm-types.
1 - Getting the Know the Psalms 2 - Delight in the Midst of Chaos (Pss 1, 2, 19) 3 - "Vindicate Me, O God" (Pss 42–43) 4 - Maintaining Our Focus on God (Pss 49, 77) 5 - The Source of Jesus' Lament (Ps 22) 6 - Led By the Shepherd (Ps 23) 7 - Things to Know As You Approach the Temple (Ps 24) 8 - Developing Spiritual Depth (Pss 61 – 63) 9 - "I Am Weary with My Moaning" (Pss 6, 38, 51) 10 - Sometimes, the Problem Is Sin (Pss 6, 38) Isaiah 6 - Motivated for MinistryAfter Isaiah answered the call, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” with his enthusiastic, “Here am I. Send me!” (Isa 6:8 NIV), the Lord revealed that his service would be quite difficult. In fact, according to the standards for ministry success many use, Isaiah fell short; only a small remnant—“a tenth” (v. 13)—would accept his teaching (vv. 9-13). Steadfast commitment was required.
What motivated him to accept the challenge and persevere? The answer is found in his call, recorded in chapter 6. In these lessons, we study this chapter, drawing on Isaiah's experience as a means of finding motivation for our own service in difficult times. Contact me if interested in studying "Motivated for Ministry" in a one-day lesson series or similar format. 1 - The Glory of the Lord of Hosts: Seeing That Keeps Us Serving (Isaiah 6:1-13) - To what can we turn to sustain us when we face the difficulties of long-term service in a world that consistently and firmly resists God? We find the answer in the call of Isaiah who, before he was called to serve, was granted a magnificent vision of the glory of the Lord. 2 - "Woe Is Me! I Am Ruined!" - To be liberated from sin and restored to glory, we need a clearer view of ourselves and a more complete view of God. 3 - "Who Will Go for Us?" (Isaiah 6:8-13) - What difference are God's people to make in the world? Isaiah's mission orders, grounded in his vision of the Lord and reception of God's grace, show us who we need to be. Isaiah 40-45-The God of All Comfort
The chapters beginning in Isaiah 40 depict one of Judah's darkest times. Conquered by Babylon; Jerusalem destroyed; the majority of them deported. Where had God gone? How could mighty Babylon be overcome? What would become of them? Isaiah's message, announced well in advance of the events, was that God had been with them all along, was sovereign, would be with them in their exile, and see them through their despair. The prophet's focus on God and messages of hope are as helpful when we face despair as for Judah centuries ago.
